Bonsai the art of miniature tree , cultivated in small containers, with limited amount of soil. There a 3 general categories of Bonsai: Indoor, Temperate and cold Hardy. Click on the underlined bonsai name to view an image of the tree. Indoor or tropical: These trees are cold sensitive and should not go below temperatures of 45o F. They do not like dry air, but do need lots of sun. Tropical bonsai can be kept indoors year-round on a window sill. These bonsai should be misted often, fertilized year-round and pruned 3 to 4 times per year and root pruning or repotting every other year. Bonsai in this category include: Serissa, Bougainvillea, Figs, Fukien, Tea, Olives, Jade, Sagerretia, Natal Plum, Cherries, Jasmine, Palms, Gardenia, Raintree, Shefflera (arboricola) and Camellia,...... Temperate: These trees are used to seasonal changes and like to be outdoors for the summer and fall or an open window with good sun. In the winter they should placed in a cool area, but not below 40o F. By decreasing the temperature the tree will go into hibernation. Slowing the growth until spring. If the tree is kept at 40o F and above it needs sun. Temperate bonsai should be kept in a sunny window fr4om February through mid May. They can put outside from May through November. In November bring them inside to the coolest place with plenty of sun. Misting as often as possible in the Winter , due to the dry air indoors. Bonsais in this category include. Juniper, Flowering Azalea, Boxwoods, Sawanna Cypress, Tsukomo Cypress, Cotonesaster, Pyracantha, Chinese Elms, Yews, Holly, Roses and most Herbs. Cold Hardy: Bonsai which need a full change of season. In May through November keep cold hardy bonsai outside, in fairly sunny spot. When it becomes too cold outside, move your bonsai into a unheated protected area (garage, basement, shed,...) be careful not to exceed temperatures below 25oF, if so mulch your bonsai with pine needles. These bonsai can be frozen in the winter, but never water a frozen bonsai. Although every 4-6 weeks when there is a thaw the tree might need some water. Begin checking your tree in February to see if it is breaking out of dormancy. If there is budding the tree will need sunlight. Move it to the coolest place with sunlight, water it more often but do not allow for it to freeze. Place outside in may. Bonsai in this category include, Evergreen Varieties, Pine, Spruce, Hinoki, Blue Moss, Cypress, Rhododendron, Andromeda, Hemlock, and Cedar. Decidious Trees are Maple, Elm, Larch, Hornbeams, Beech, Birch, and Wisteria. |
